5 Tips to a Tighter Tummy

Tuesday, November 22, 2011 7:47:10 PM Etc/GMT+5

Is a little tummy bulge getting you down? Do you have a big party coming up and wish you looked just a bit flatter? Here are 5 tips to help you acheive just that.

1: Stand Up Straight
Straighten your shoulders and stand up proud and tall. This will naturally tuck in your stomach. According to trainer Ellen Barrett, "imagine your spine as an elevator going up and lift your rib cage up and away from hips." Practice the tuck till it becomes comfortable, and soon it'll be habit.

2: Switch to Green Tea
Tufts University study showed that people who drink green tea lost more tummy fat than people who drank other caffeinated beverages. Plus, green tea has lots of other health benefits, so it's a great switch to make.

3: Get more sleep
Researchers at Wake Forest School of Medicine found that people who get 6-8 hours of sleep a night have significantly less tummy fat than those who sleep fewer than 6 hours. That's because when you don't get enough sleep, your metabolism slows down, causing you to burn fat more slowly.

4: Avoid the 3 C's
To prevent stomach bloating, nutritionist Lauren Slayton suggests steering clear of the "three C's—canned, carbs, carbonated." Eat fresh fruits an veggies, minimize your carb intake (or at the very least, switch to whole grains) and start drinking un-carbonated beverages (like green tea!). Healthy natural deflators include asparagus, protein, dandelion tea, parsley, and apple cider vinegar.

5: Embrace High Waists  High Waisted Skirt
Wearing high waisted skirts or pants downplays ab flab. The high waisted cut draws attention to your natural waist, which is usually the narrowest part of the torso for most women.

Caring For Your Hosiery

Tuesday, May 24, 2011 7:49:23 PM Etc/GMT+5

When you wear hosiery on a regular basis, it can sometimes feel like your throwing out money, especially when your hosiery rips after just one or two wears. Here are a few tips to help you prolong the life of your hosiery.

1: Pick Durable Hosiery
Of course we all know that the lower the denier, the sheerer and more natural looking the hosiery. But the truth is, the lower the denier, the more likely it is that your hosiery will rip sooner. If you really want to strike a balance between sheerness and durability, aim for 20 denier hosiery. Levante Silk Caresse is an excellent 20 denier option.

2: Keep It Slow And Smooth
You'll probably agree that most of your hosiery runs are developed as you're putting on and taking off your hosiery. You can prevent this by keeping in mind the following.

Make sure to take off all rings before beginning to put on your hosiery. Ensure that there are no chipped fingernails or bits of dry skin lurking, just waiting to snag your pantyhose.

Start by bunching your pantyhose all the way to the toe, and gently slide your toe in. Gradually pull the hosiery up your leg, gently letting go along the way.

When removing your hosiery, never pull from the toe. Start at the waist and slowly roll or gently tug your pantyhose down. You'll know you're doing it right when your pantyhose are completely inside out when you've finished removing them.

And of course, it goes without saying that pulling on your pantyhose in a rush is never a good idea. Take an extra two minutes in the morning and you'll find your hosiery lasts that much longer

3: Hand Wash Means Hand Wash
We've all experienced that little jolt of excitement when we first noticed the 'hand wash' cycle on our washing machine. But unless you're sitting inside your washing machine, gently agitating the hosiery with your hands, the hand wash cycle is not the equivalent of hand washing. No matter how gentle, the machine cycle is going to be much tougher on your hosiery that it may be built to handle. So forget the washing machine - for hosiery, we must return to our primitive roots and wash them by hand.
When you're done, gently squeeze the hosiery to remove excess water. Do not wring. Hosiery should preferably be laid flat to dry.

4: Give It Some Space
Pretend your hosiery and the rest of your clothes are siblings that fight like cats and dogs when sharing a room. Your hosiery should have its very own storage place, away from articles of clothing whose buttons, zippers and clasps may damage your hosiery. Choose a soft, cloth bag or a smooth container to avoid any snags.

Your hosiery can last longer than the first wear. It just takes some patience and extra care, but these tips can save you money and aggravation in the long run.
What are your tips for caring for your hosiery? Let us know in the comments!

The Perfect Transitioning Pieces (Part 1)

Monday, September 13, 2010 7:56:56 PM Etc/GMT+5

Tis a confusing time in the world of fashion. When it's 92 degrees one day and 68 the next, it can be difficult to figure out what to wear. Bare legs and flip flops may no longer be in season, but nobody's quite ready to take the dive into tights and boots. So... what do you wear?

Transitioning pieces of course. Gee, thanks. Do you mind clarifying that please? Sure. (It's ok to talk to myself, right?) The first summer-fall-winter transitioning piece is that ever so versatile contribution to fashion - leggings. Leggings, or footless tights, or whatever you'd like to call them, are a great way to take a summer outfit and make it just a bit more fall appropriate. They also add some extra warmth if you're wearing a shorter skirt.

Leggings usually go best with flats. On a warmer day, you can pair capri leggings with your favorite pair of sandals. On a cooler day, you can choose ankle-length leggings and a shoe with fuller coverage.

Leggings look great on kids too! Pair patterned leggings like our camo capri leggings or daisy printed leggings with a short denim skirt for a cool, casual look, or a pair of solid leggings like our lace capri leggings, Country Kids capri leggings or Daisy Footloose footless tights for a more sedate look.

Stay tuned for our next segment - fall transitioning piece #2! In the meantime, check out our great collection of leggings here!

Sheer is Here

Thursday, September 2, 2010 6:59:22 PM Etc/GMT+5

sheer black tights
We've all been in that situation -where we've begged our moms to please please not go outside wearing those sheer black pantyhose. "Sheer black? Seriously?" As my sister-in-law would say, "Do you WANT to look like a nerd?" Well, girls, time to bite our tongues and come crawling back to our moms for forgiveness because sheer is, dare we say it, actually IN now.

Sheer tights are a sexy, stylish way to dress up any outfit. Sheer, patterned tights, are even trendier. Hanes just came out with a new line of Silk Reflections Sheer Fashion Tights and we can't wait to try them! They manage to be trendy and sophisticated all at once and are equally perfect to wear to the office or a night on the town.

What's In Style This Fall?

Thursday, August 26, 2010 12:55:37 PM Etc/GMT+5

Yes, I'm afraid it's true. Summer is drawing to a close. But it's not all bad - the end of summer means the beginning of fall, and that means new clothes and new trends. So what's in style this fall?

Military-Inspired Styles
Army greens and camels are hot colors, as are utilitarian styles. You'll see lots of structured jackets, big lace-up boots and trench coats, as well as cross-body bags and messenger bags. You can jump on the military bandwagon with our super-cute Camo Capri Leggings for Girls.

Animal Prints
Animal prints are all over this fall and this trend is not limited to accessories. To incorporate this trend into your wardrobe on a small scale, pick animal print shoes, top or bag. If you're the more daring sort, have no fear - you'll be perfectly on trend wearing a full animal print dress.

Mad Men Look
This late 50's, early 60's throwback trend is inspired by the hit AMC series, Mad Men. Red, red lips, kitten heels, full skirts - embrace them, girls, because it looks like they're back - along with those impractical handbags you have to hold in your hand. Look for suits with a very tailored look, as well as blouses with collars with ties.

Which of these styles do you see yourself incorporating into your wardrobe?

Taking the Trend too Far? Men in 'Statement Socks'

Sunday, July 18, 2010 7:09:54 PM Etc/GMT+5

You know the old sob story - women get to obsess over fashion, men get boring suits and ties. Well, in a recent article in the Wall Street Journal, one man describes his search for, as he calls them, 'statement socks" - the one medium available to him through which he can express his personality. Bright orange, purple, whatever the color, he'll take them any day over boring black or navy. And when your socks have to be the most different they can possibly be,what's the ONLY logical next step? Two mismatched socks, of course! You don't get much more 'different" than that. I know what you're thinking now - what does his wife think of all this? In his words:

"My wife walked in as I was putting them on—the red one with blue stripes on the left foot, the green one with blue stripes on the right.
'I've never seen you look so stupid,' she muttered."

Frankly, we'd have to agree. What do you think? Can you see your husband, father, brother, or boyfriend in a pair of brightly colored mismatched socks?

How To: Lose Weight & Look Great

Sunday, May 16, 2010 8:54:35 PM Etc/GMT+5

There comes a time in every girl's life when she weighs just a teensy bit more than she'd like. Maybe the winter was too depressing. Cold and windy and nasty. Eating makes it all better. Or, maybe it's just hard to tell if you've gained weight under bulky winter sweaters. Or maybe that darn baby weight just seems to have settled in for the long haul.

Whatever the reason, summer is when we want to be looking our best. So what to do now? Before I go any further, I must apologize for my language. But there's no getting around it; the only solution is that dreaded four letter word. Diet. I know. Isn't there an easy way to lose weight without dieting? But the truth is, the only way to lose the weight and keep it off is to reform your eating habits.

But there's a Secretlose weight by not eating after 7 p.m.

When I say reform your eating habits, I don't mean just cutting out the triple hot fudge sundaes. To lose weight and keep it off, you have to change how and when you eat. And the biggest secret is one that's not even that hard to do. I'm sure you've heard it before but the key to losing weight, besides for cutting calories, is, drumroll please.... not to eat after 7 p.m.

Huh? Why does that do anything?

metabolism stops working when you go to sleep

How does that help? It helps in two ways. Firstly, your body has time to properly digest all the food you've eaten during the day. Your metabolism doesn't want to work any harder than it has to. The second you go to sleep, it's like the boss has left the office. Your metabolism decides to take a snooze too. And all that food you just ate? Eh, I'll get to it at some point. I'll just stick it in this Fat drawer in the mean time. Yup, if you go to sleep too early, all that food you just ate gets stored as fat. So stop eating earlier, and give your metabolism a chance to do its thing.

Not eating after 7 also cuts out unhealthy snacking. If you know 7 p.m. is the food cut-off time, you'll be less tempted to sneak that late-night chocolate bar snack. So that cuts down on the calories.

So that's it? That's all I have to do?

Obviously eating all-you-can-eat Chinese 3 meals a day and stopping at 7 p.m. is not going to help you lose weight. But if you're eating sensibly, giving your body enough time to digest your food before going to sleep can be the key difference between losing weight and just staying stagnant.

Prep Your Legs for Summer

Tuesday, April 20, 2010 9:34:47 PM Etc/GMT+5

Summer's around the corner and it's time to start prepping your legs for short skirts, flip flops and summer weather! Here are a few tips to get you started.

Tone

If you've spent most of the winter curled up on your couch snacking on cheese curls, your legs probably aren't in the best of shape. If you want lean, toned legs you're going to have to start working at it. Luckily for you, there are tons of easy, non-time consuming ways to do this.  If you're short on time and want to do some leg exercises at work, you can do leg extensions under your desk, without your boss even noticing! Just sit back in your chair and extend first one leg, and hold. Then raise the other, and hold. You'll feel the strain in your calves so you'll know it's working!

Moisturize    tanning moisturizer for beautiful legs

Dry legs don’t exactly give off a gorgeous, glowing impression. The winter was hard on your skin – now it’s time to treat it right. Moisturize your legs every day to get them feeling silky smooth. Try adding a hint of color by using a slow tanning moisturizer that adds a little bit of color each time you moisturize. That’ll give you a jump start on you summer tan which should tide you over till the weather gets warm enough to hit the beach!

Pedicure     purple nail polish

We all lead busy lives, that’s the truth. But every woman deserves to pamper herself once a while, and the change of seasons is a great excuse to treat yourself to a pedicure. Browns, grays and soft purples are hot colors this summer – but don’t be afraid to liven things up with some brighter variations!

Why We Love Black Opaque Tights

Sunday, November 29, 2009 5:48:44 PM Etc/GMT+5

Besides for the fact that all the cool kids are doing it? Here's why:

  • They're slimming:  Black = slim, and tights are no exception. Black tights automatically make your legs look slimmer.
  • They elongate your legs: Especially when paired with black shoes, they make your legs look like they just keep going, making you look taller. Going totally monochromatic, while possibly slightly morbid-looking when that color is black, heightens the effect.

Time to bring black tights out from their exile and place them back on the fashion pedestal right next to their bolder, patterned counterparts. Check out a few of your best options here!

Robin Hood Men in Tights

Tuesday, August 18, 2009 6:20:06 PM Etc/GMT+5

After years of watching women adapt men's fashions to suit their own, men have finally decided to fight back. Women have taken pants, ties and oxfords from men... now men have taken tights from women and superheroes. Meggings, as the male leggings are commonly referred to, first showed up on overseas catwalks in 2007 but have since gained rapid popularity. At least when women make the mistake of thinking leggings are pants, they wear longer tops over them. The trend for men seems to be to wear them in a manner akin to ultra tight jeans.

Something tells me you wouldn't catch any of these men wearing a baseball cap, sitting at a football game and chugging beer....

A Warm Welcome to Our New Mascots!

Thursday, July 30, 2009 3:56:17 PM Etc/GMT+5

We'd like to welcome Gabbie and Kneelee to the Knees and Toes team as our new mascots. An intense voting campaign on Facebook determined the names for our mascots and the creators of the winning names each won a $20 gift certificate to Knees and Toes. Check our Facebook page often for other fun contests and promotions!

Now, a brief bio on our new team members:
gabbie the mascot
Age: 17 sock puppet years
Favorite Color: Pink
Favorite Food: Strawberry ice cream with chocolate swirls, rainbow sprinkles and chocolate fudge on top
Favorite Activities: Likes long walks on the beach except for the part where the sand gets all over her, trying various fad diets, tanning

Gabbie started out as a replacement sock for a Knees and Toes employee whose rainboots just weren't able to hold up to the rigors of international travel. Walking in Ben Yehuda in Jerusalem on a rainy evening, the aforementioned employee noticed that her feet were getting wetter and wetter with each step she took. Confused by this state of affairs, having thought that rain boots would protect her feet from the rain rather than bathe them in it, she decided to purchase a new pair of socks to replace her now soaking wet ones. (She later found out that the rubber soles of her boots had literally cracked in half, leaving her to walk along the rainy streets in the cotton bottom, but that has no bearing on our story.) She picked up the first pair of socks she found, not bothering to do any intense interviewing, and so the pink sock we now know as Gabbie was one step closer to her dream. The sock was then relegated to the bottom of the sock drawer and forgotten about. When the idea of creating a sock puppet first arose, the cute little pink sock was retrieved from her ignominious position as a sock drawer filler and given a complete makeover. She was then presented to the Knees and Toes fans and given the name Gabbie. She is so excited to be joining the Knees and Toes team as their new mascot and can't wait to acquaint herself with all our fans and customers. Become her friend on Facebook now.

kneelee the mascot
Age: 21
Favorite Color: Blue and Purple
Favorite Food: Organic cheeses and Tofu
Favorite Activities: Jogging and tennis, all done at 6 am before she leaves for work

Kneelee joined the Knees and Toes team after a brief stint as a sample sock. "The sample sock career just wasn't challenging enough for me." She told interviewers. "I didn't feel as though my talents were being utilized to their utmost. I was being wasted." She has always been interested in PR and was absolutely ecstatic when she was chosen to be the Knees and Toes mascot. She had applied for the mascot position at numerous other legwear stores, but she never quite felt comfortable until now. After trying an endless number of different hair styles, makeup styles and accessories, she finally settled on her current look. Cutting her hair was a bit traumatic, she admits, but she thinks it will be better for her image in the long run. "Signing the contract with Knees and Toes is a HUGE step for me. I couldn't be happier with the way my career is going right now." She told interviewers last week. You can become her friend on Facebook by clicking here.

Our Picks: Summer-Worthy Pantyhose

Tuesday, June 9, 2009 2:46:07 PM Etc/GMT+5

Come summer, most of us would like to wear as few layers as possible. Pantyhose, if not absolutely neccessary, get thrown out the window (or into the back of our sock drawers). But, for various reasons, pantyhose sometimes need to be a part of our summer wardrobe, despite the 95 degree weather and 100% humidity. So what's a girl to do? Well, we've come up with some suggestions of the most summer-worthy pantyhose that'll keep you looking and feeling great all summer long.

If you're wearing pantyhose in the summer, you want something that looks sheer and natural, but that still gives your leg a hint of that summer tan. We're big fans of the Melas Bare Control pantyhose. This ultra sheer, 8 denier pantyhose has a strength of 15, which means it won't rip quite as easily as other ultra sheer pantyhose. The sheer leg gives your legs that just-moisturized sheen with a hint of color for a great summer look. Plus, it's got an invisible toe which looks great with open toe shoes.

While sandalfoot toe is a great option for sandals, as the name implies, some might prefer to go with toeless pantyhose. Hanes Silk Reflections Transparent Sheer Pantyhose (what a mouthful) is another great, ultra-sheer look for summer. Boasting a sheer look to match any complexion, these pantyhose have a breathable, comfortable control top that makes pantyhose-wearing that much cooler. They come in four shades, Fair, Light, Medium and Dark so that whatever your skin tone, you can find the shade that's right for you. Combine all that with the toeless factor and wearing these with sandals ensures perfectly natural, just nicer-than-usual looking legs.

Our last pick for this summer is the Levante Lia Control pantyhose. One of our customers tells us that while people can hardly believe she's wearing pantyhose when wearing these, her legs still get that extra toned, sleek look. Talk about best of both worlds. These pantyhose are ultra sheer, just 10 denier. They've got a sandal toe that makes them ideal for open toe shoes and a comfortable control top that helps you look your best, especially after that huge ice cream sundae you just consumed while trying to beat the summer heat!

Remember, the summer is all about looking natural, so while you might want to buy pantyhose in a bit of a darker color than usual to get that tanned leg look, stick to colors that are just a shade or two above your natural skin tone. Kind of like the bronzer rule. Now, it's time to break out the strappy summer sandals and start looking your best!
